影片讲述向东（吴宇森）、向明（尹扬明）两个兄弟偷渡到港、闯荡新世界的经历。没有更多成长体验的观众对影片的灰暗基调和伤感主题可能不感兴趣，片中有关内地生活的冷酷描写也没有任何“观赏性”可言，作为一部香港电影，她显得极度不正常，但2004年读到这部拍摄于1990年电影，我们分明嗅到了史诗的味道。编剧南燕，由《监狱风云》到《学校风云》，所走的正是从商业中逃离的路线，《勇闯天下》第一次把视野放到港外，环境对人的压迫力更加沉重，因为表达相对自由，对陈旧体制的批判反比内地历史事件亲历者在统治阶层容许范围内做出的反省更具力度，灰色的北京，作为压在心头的影像，可以将《东宫西宫》、《蓝宇》比下去，仅仅因为这个，本片就非看不可，何况还有英雄导演吴宇森？在《英雄本色》、《辣手神探》中，我们总是嫌他戏份太少，这回不必失望了。。英国某小镇上的两个男子鲍勃（Bruce Jones 布鲁斯•琼斯饰）和汤米（Ricky Tomlinson 里奇•汤姆林森饰）中年失业，生活陷入困境。两人铤而走险，驱车到山里偷羊，然后请屠夫加工羊肉四处兜售。钱未赚到手，赖以为生的货车却又被人偷去。他们只能四处打零工赚钱，水管工、酒吧保镖甚至草皮小偷，为了钱想尽办法。 高利贷商人威尔林闯入鲍勃家催帐，羞辱他的妻子和女儿。鲍勃气愤不过，手持铁钳前去寻仇…… 本片荣获1993年戛纳国际电影节评委会大奖。。In this bitingly satirical film Peter Slovan, a continuous source of trouble for the film functionaries of the socialist Slovakia, tackles an evergreen topic – the corruptive effects of power. Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power.
