一段不堪回首的中国近代历史，由大导演张彻娓娓道来。清朝末年政局腐败，社会民不聊生，慈禧太后与一群愚昧无知的权贵大臣不但毫无抵御外国列强侵占，以及保护人民的能力，反而迷信以吞符念咒，自称无坚不摧的「义和团」可以抵御洋人，决意向列强宣战。结果导致八国联军攻陷北京，慈禧太后仓惶逃难；人民这才醒悟到，只有孙中山先生领导的革命运动，才是挽救中国的唯一希望。本片于台湾实景拍摄，战争场面浩大，并由钻石级演员压阵，包括「影坛长青树」李丽华饰演慈禧太后、「功夫小子」傅声饰演刀枪不入的「义和团」铁汉曾献汉、性感尤物胡锦饰演一代名妓赛金花、红歌星甄妮饰演赛金花义妹小菊，编写出一阙英雄儿女的壮志悲歌。。From Joseph Conrad's great novel comes the story of a young seaman trying to helm a damaged boat to Singapore and dealing with many unfortunate events. While on command of the situation, he also devotes himself to help his failing crew and some of the boat's many passengers, some of them who are in poor health conditions.。
